History of the dildo.

Would you be surprised if I told you that Dildos existed over 30,000 years ago?

Archaeologists claim that dildos were used in the stone age, while the shape of these artefacts might resemble a penis, its impossible to tell if they are in fact ‘sex toys’.

We now fast forward to ancient Greek times in and around the 5th century where Greek art often portrayed sexual scenes which included dildos, either being used for self masturbation or in orgies.

They often kept a record of their sexual practises and mention using an olisbokollix which translates as a dildo made out of bread, or a baguette to be precise!

Even the ancient Chinese enjoyed their sex toys where the elite would have their tombs prepared with their lifetime luxuries and often a decorated bronze dildo would be included.

In the middle ages, the mention of dildos and sex toys in general started to diminish due to the fact that Christianity started to spread around the world, owning a sex toy or even talking about sex became taboo.

In the 1800’s sex toys started to become popular again, in 1869 American physician George Taylor came up with the idea of the ‘Manipulator’ which was steam powered! In short it was a dildo attached to a steam engine that caused vibrations. The design was not intended for sexual pleasure but designed to get rid of ‘Hysteria’ in women.

Then in the 1950’s along came the ‘massager’s’ which were often boxed with pictures of males and females using them on their faces, heads and everywhere else except for where they were secretly used. Then along came the sexual revolution of the 60s, 70’s and 80’s where all sex toys took off.

There seems to be two major types of dildos, those that look like a penis and those that don’t. They have come on a long way over the years and many have become very lifelike, such as the Loving Joy Real Feel range for those that prefer the feel and look of a real human penis.

Realistic dildos feature a pronounced, bulbous penis head, usually circumcised, although uncut dildos are now available too. Raised veins along the shaft don’t just make the appearance of the toy more realistic but they can also provide extra internal stimulation

Dildos now come with ‘realistic’ balls to enhance the external stimulation when the dildo is fully inserted, King Cock has decided to go one step further in there pursuit of the perfect dildo by designing perfect replicas of the penis which makes their range of dildos an absolute favourite with customers.

As science progresses and we learn more about the human anatomy, dildos follow the same path, in the early days a dildo would normally be straight and hard but all that has now changed with dildos coming in curved, ridged and sloped to create better internal stimulation. Dildo’s are not solely used in the vagina, many people like to use them in their anus as well to massage their prostrates and many are designed with the G-spot in mind as well as adding different textures to the dildo to enhance the stimulation. Non-realistic dildos are often preferred by lesbian women for strap-on or other type of penetrative sex, and they are popular with heterosexual men who enjoy anal play.

Double ended dildos (which can be found here), also known as double enders which feature in a lot of pornographic films are dildos which can be used by two people at the same time, or even individually with one end inserted in the vagina and the other in anus which gives the feeling of double penetration during sex or even masturbation without the need for two separate toys.

Silicone is the ‘normal’ and most widely used material for dildos but there are other materials available. Silicone offers smoothness and can be firm but with a little give and some flexibility which would best resemble a real penis.

Metal and glass are becoming popular materials for dildos, as these are hard and rigid and ideal for temperature play as they be cooled in your home fridge or freezer or warmed up with warm water. These are probably the most hygienic as well as they can be cleaned thoroughly.

Suction cup dildos are becoming more popular and are available in realistic and non-realistic varieties. The suction cup can be mounted on a flat surface such as the floor, a wall or even bathroom tiles, so you can have fun in the shower. Suction cup dildos have the added advantage that they can be used with a strap on harness as these usually come with a selection of O rings that allows for different sized dildos.
